Breed Improvement of Cattle and Sheep with SIGNET and EBVs

Why EBV's

EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values) of tups and ewes within a sheep flock provide exactly the management information required to identify the good and the bad, and are rapidly becoming the focus of commercial farmers across the world when buying in breeding animals. However, the EBV has to be calculated from data collected on the farm, whether this be parentage, lambing ease, milk score or weight data. this is often a considerable task. For large flocks this is often time consuming even with EID, and without eid even impossible.

Why FarmIT 3000 Can Help!

When it comes to collecting information of the farm the mandatory implimentation of EID (electronic identification) has helped in the identification and collection of the data. Collecting data with EID is not neccessarilly quicker than simply writing the data down, but enables the data to be imported into the computer without typing the data in, thus saving considerable time. Quite literally you can be analysing the data within seconds of returning to the computer. This fact should be stressed to the person doing the data collection, who may not fully appreciate the time to manually type his scribbled notes into the computer and the fact that if the data is wrong it is now his fault rather than rather than yours!

Who Use's SIGNET

"We have customers who annually record over 1500 Llyen ewes which are all registered with SIGNET and have appropriate EBVs."

FarmIT 3000 used in conjunction with EID (electronic Identification) definitely improves thing's as most of our customer would be happy to testify, in fact it is the reason why so many people us FarmIT 3000.  Specially designed routine for lambing, weighing, body condition scoring (BCS), tupping and scanning enable the data to be accurately collected in order to meet the requirements for SIGNET and SIL.

Specialised SIGNET Reports Make Sending Data to Signet Easy

Specific reports designed hand in hand with SIGENT are produced at the click of a button to send the collected lambing and weight data to SIGNET. The software also allows the recording of specific animal identification codes meaning animals are matched correctly.

Importing EBV's allows analysis and animal selection

EBV data can then be imported back into the software for analysis, animals identified and then loaded into EID readers for identification in the field. The breeding index for example may be used to drive a drafter or displayed on a mobile device (FarmIT Mobile).

Customisable Breeding Traits

The "Breeding Traits" capability of FarmIT 3000 also provides for the import and analyse of genetic markers for example MyoMax .

You may analyse the breeding traits and select animals based on combined EBV scores and your own defined traits, making the time taken to collect and record the data well worth the effort.

Achieving Better Returns with EID.

The electronic identification of sheep has been and no doubt will continue to be a subject which many of you have mixed feelings about. However, for those of you who already record manually or wish to record information about your sheep then EID opens up a whole world of possibility.

Mr Duncan Nelless is one such farmer. Duncan records over 1200 Lleyn ewes, lambing them outdoors! He also records details of sire, dams, lambs produced and breeding traits.

Using Agrident APR500's the data is easily collected and with FarmIT3000 the data is easily analysed, and it needs to be! With over 1200 ewes and 4 years of data, that's a lot of lambs!

The result is better returns, with an increase in breeding indexes and weight of lambs.
