Configuration and Diagnostic Mode

This mode is used to initially configure and install the service into the NT Service Manager account. It may also be used to remove the service and diagnose the operation of the service. Once installed and configured it is also possible to monitor the operation of the service as it handles client connections.

Running the Service in Configuration and Diagnostic Mode

The service may be started from the dos command prompt or the START menu RUN command by specifying the following command line.

C:\Program Files\Border Software\Licensing Service\BAServer –d "Border Software Licensing Service"

Note

The -d option launches the service in configuration and diagnostic mode, this is followed by the service name in quotes. You may specify any name you wish and therefore may install multiple services on the same machine.

Configuration Options

Service Name – This is the name that will be displayed in the NT Service manager once the service installed.

IP Address – This is the IP address on which the service is to listen for connections. Normally this will be the IP address of the machine, however the service is installed on a cluster of machines it may be the

Port– This is the Port on which the service is to listen for connections. By default this is set to 5002 however it may be set to any port you wish. The service will however fail to start should the number conflict with another service.

Install Button – This button is only enabled if the service is not currently installed. It controls the installation of the service into the NT Service Manager database. Once you have configured the service select the ‘INSTALL’ button to install the service.

Remove Button – This button is only enabled once the service has been installed. Selecting this button removes the service from the service manager database.

Diagnostics

Packet Count – This indicates the total number of packets that the service has currently received.

Current Connections – This indicates the total number of current socket connections

Socket Errors – This indicates the total number of socket errors

Last Response – This indicates the last response the service made to a client request.

Last Request – This indicates the last client request.

Send Test Button – This button initiates the transmission of a test request to the service listening on the address specified in the IP Address box and on the port specified in the Port Window. You may thus send a test request to the service and see the response in the ‘Last Response window’. You will also be notified of the success or failure of the test by a pop up dialog window.

Normal Mode

Once you have configured and installed the service. It is normally started and stopped from within the NT Service Manager. The actual displayed name in service manager will depend on the name under which you installed the service. You may then start and stop the service manually or configure the service to start automatically as the machine started.

To start the service, select the service and click the start button.

The service will then attempt to start. If it fails check the NT Event log for errors otherwise the service should then be shown as started.

To stop the service, select the service and click the stop button.
